Leaving the cottage, Mr. Fox didn't head home just yet. The cottage sat on the very edge of the Magical Forest, a place where the trees grew taller than anywhere else and the moss glowed with a faint, green light.
Since he needed more food, he stepped past the tree line. The air here hummed with a low, magical vibration. Mr. Fox used his nose, sniffing past the smell of pine and earth. Aha!
At the base of a giant oak tree, he found a cluster of Moon-Mushrooms. These weren't ordinary mushrooms; they were plump, white, and tasted like sweet cream when cooked. He gathered as many as he could carry in his mouth, careful not to bruise them. Nearby, he found a patch of Wild Sweet-Berries, wrapping them in a large dock leaf to keep them safe.
Loaded with supplies—the taste of the Lady's roast still lingering on his tongue and a bundle of magical forest treats in his jaws—Mr. Fox began the journey home.
He came to the crossroads. To the left was the quick way past the Farmer’s barn. To the right was the long way, through the dense thistles and over the hill.
Mr. Fox’s tail gave a phantom tingle. He immediately turned right.
He scampered through the thistles, his paws light and quick. He climbed the hill and looked down over the valley, feeling like the King of the Night. He had food, he had his life, and he had a lesson learned.
When he finally slid down the tunnel into the den, the fire had burned down to glowing embers. Mrs. Fox was awake, waiting for him.
He dropped the Moon-Mushrooms and the leaf of Sweet-Berries on the table.
"Oh, my adventurous husband," Mrs. Fox whispered, looking at the bounty. "Moon-mushrooms! The cubs will be so delighted in the morning. And you are safe?"
"Safe and sound," Mr. Fox said, curling his tail—bald patch and all—around his body as he settled into the soft bedding beside her. "The Farmer slept, the Lady was kind, and the forest provided. But now," he yawned, a great wide yawn, "I think I’m ready to sleep for a week."
"Sleep well, my hero," Mrs. Fox purred, resting her head on his shoulder. And deep in the safety of the earth, the Fox family slept, bellies full and hearts happy.
